..but fortunately only on local radio, so if you’re not in the Radio Sheffield area then you’ll miss out on hearing me on the morning show tomorrow at about 0920…but don’t worry, you can listen again! http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/sheffield.shtml Look for ‘The Gareth Evans Show’, I was on about 15 minutes after is started:) As you can hear the interview went swimmingly and the presenter, Gareth was really nice and somewhat tottylicious to boot! He asked me some great questions and seemed genuinely interested in my in-world exploits, so that made the interview a lot of fun. If you were listening I hope you enjoyed it, and I thought it was especially funny when he called me ‘bonkers’ on air..I didn’t realise it was *that* obvious!!!
…is bloody monumental.
Last night I spent absolutely AGES writing a spiffing review for you all to enjoy, and in a moment of what can only be described as utter stupidity on my part, I switched my PC off without saving it. GAH! Then bugger me, I’ve just taken the time to rewrite the piece for your perusal, and I blinking well pressed the wrong button and lost the chuffer all over again. Talk about a bad day! As you can imagine, the air has been an interesting shade of blue for the past twenty minutes but upon reflection, I figured that it was probably for the best. You see there are glowing reviews, and there are reviews that are so sickly sweet as to be vomit inducing, and in all honesty, I’d created the latter. Twice. So here we go, third time lucky, BUT, this being the old Kitty you all know and love in all probabliity I’m going to write the same sycophantic review all over again. I cares not one jot mind, because sometimes, just sometimes, a product comes along that is entirely deserving of such praise. So, settle down with your favourite sick bag to hand as I make you go all hyperactive with my prose and cause you to endure one helluva humungous virtual sugar-rush….
On to the good stuff then, and boy oh boy is this good!! ‘Redgrave‘ have got a new skin out, and dear readers it is a bobby dazzler of such gargantuan proportions that you really do need to beg, steal or borrow the Lindens required to own such a piece of virtual happy-pie. I know I’m going to have to, as I really cannot afford this wonder myself at the moment, and horror upon horror I’ve had to make do with the demo skin for my photos. It would have been ridiculous though to not share this one with you, so no matter that I’m photographing myself in the buff in a demo skin…anything for my faithful readers! In fact, this skin looks so good DESPITE being a demo that if anything these pictures just prove how utterly fantastic it really is!
It’s called ‘Vivian’ and comes in pale and tan versions. As you’ve probably noticed before I don’t usually bother with tan skins, although there have been notable exceptions to that rule (Calla and Artilleri) This time I had a feeling that this would work on me in a tan shade and I was right- it’s just divine. I’ve got prior Redgrave skin experience and that was similarly enjoyable, but this latest release has just got me goosebumpy all over. So, where to begin?
The facial shading, in particular the eyeshadow application, is just beautiful. If you zoom in really close, and if you have your graphics settings uber-high you can see speckles of colour across the eyelid that can only be described as sublime. For example, the gold variant features glitter particles that are scattered loosely over the eyelids and onto the cheekbones and it is genuinely astonishing! The combination of eyeshadows in each of the make-up palettes are all really flattering, well-conceived and executed. Framing the eyes are the lashes obviously, and here’s an interesting thing- they look as though you’ve used a tad too much mascara upon your wand when applying, but the overall definition they provide is excellent. They almost feel clumpy but manage to pull the look off surprisingly well and this is a huge benefit to me seeing as I’m beyond useless at applying prim lashes, despite owning oodles of pairs…it makes no odds though because this skin is just fine without those particular enhancements. Moving down onto the cheeks and there’s a subtle rosy glow on each palette offering lovely face shaping without any of that embarrassing Apache indian style blush that you find on lesser skins. It results in a beautiful healthy glow for your avatar, which looks even better if you use a facelight, and fortunately you can get a freebie one from Redgrave.
One of the most important features of a skin are the lips and teeth. In my experience they often get over-looked, with the eyes being viewed as the sole facial focus, but nothing could be farther from the truth. You need a substantial gob to balance out a skin, and upon first glance you may think that the lips on Vivienn are a tad on the large and juicy ‘Team Angelina’ side of lipness, rather than the moist girl-next-door ‘Team Aniston’;but take a minute and rethink because they’re perfect here. Obviously this depends upon your underlying shape, but the effect is subtle voluptuousness regardless of whatever lip-colour choice you select. For me the lips really set off the whole face on this skin and certainly raise it above the majority of skins out there. If you employ a smiling device you’ll be pleased to see your pearly whites are toned very well against the rest of your colouring;no garish ‘glow-in-the-dark’ gnashers here, and the teeth themselves aren’t humungous tomb-stone shaped toofypegs either. I think the combination actually provides one of the best smiles around in Second Life, so congratulations to Redgrave for taking the time to complete an oft-overlooked and under-worked area:) The mouth is finished off perfectly with superb lip-lining and gloss and a luscious texture that again requires you to zoom in to really reap the whole benefit. I have to confess that even though in real life and second I’m a red lipstick kind of girl I have to be honest and say that I love all the lip-colour options equally, with the choices here being so excellent that they practically drag you kicking and screaming and make you more adventurous with your make-up selections!
So the eyeshadows and the lip colours are winners guys, and the combos alone make this skin worthy of your investment. I wasn’t let down by any of them, and usually when you purchase a complete set of skin make-ups there’s always one or two that you know you’ll never use. That’s defo not the case here. I wasn’t let down by any of them, and usually when you purchase a complete set of skin make-ups there’s always one or two that you know you’ll never use. That’s defo not the case here. Facially the skin doesn’t disappoint at all, but wait, before you go rushing off to mug your virtual granny for dollars because we haven’t even discussed the body yet!
The texture deployed for the body is *stunning*. See through the tan colouration (which isn’t bold and brassy, nor even remotely orange) and you’ll be rewarded with freckles and blemishes that make this skin scarily authentic. Areas where highlights and definition are most required such as the collarbone, shoulder blades, breasts and buttocks are perfectly accentuated with tone and shading that is amongst some of the best you’ll see on the grid. The details don’t stop there either, there’s a cute belly button, nicely shaded ankles and knees and great hands. Alas, my only quibble is the hands, for I’d have loved to have seen some different manicure colours included with the make-ups rather than the plain french that is provided, but no matter..that’s a nice to have and what we are supplied with is absolutely fine. The feet aren’t as bad as some other Second Life feet either, which is a wonder, but there’s no ground breaking tootsie definition here. I don’t think that’s a biggy though because I’m sure your virtual toes will be crushed into some wonderful footwear as you stride confidently across the grid so you’ll rarely get to see them anyways. The lady-garden area ( fnarr fnarr) is very well ‘detailed’ and very tidily kept, and will look fine in ‘artistic’ shots, should that be your in-world hobby of choice. To be perfectly honest I don’t really pay that much attention to such areas, because cybering has never been on my list of priorities in world, but I know that it’s likely to be important to some readers here and I can assure you that if it is then you won’t be disappointed
So as skins go we’re talking an absolute winner here folks, a fact that is proved beyond all doubt when you venture into the Redgrave store in-world. The skins are surrounded by scores of appreciative punters trying demos and buying. Redgrave certainly seem to have got the skin recipe just right, and I suggest that if you’re in the market for a new one that you head on over and give this one a whirl because it really is amongst the best I’ve ever seen. Besides, it’s Thanksgiving for my US readers and I can think of no better way for you to celebrate than to go and treat yourself to something extra special:)
A final note; I’ve photographed a variety of Vivian demos with a selection of Dutch Touch hair, notably the Phyllie design ( L$150 each) Again, I’ve used a demo but I shall be purchasing the whole lot when I get paid ( in RL) because it goes well with this Redgrave skin and the style is absolutely vital! I personally think that this is the best I’ve seen Kitty look for ages, and let’s face it, with teh skin costing L$2990 to look this good and turn virtual heads ain’t that much of a hardship really, is it? ( That’s all 15 make-ups!! BLOODY HELL!)
So empty your virtual sick-bag dear reader, wipe down your chin and remove the carrots, make yourself look presentable and bugger off over to Redgrave and indulge…your virtual-self *will* thank you for it!
Face it, the metaverse adores a good controversy. Regardless of how many signs you’ll see dotted about a sim shouting ‘No Drama’ or ‘Drama Free Zone’ there’s nothing the grid likes better than a bit of a kerfuffle. And boy is there some kerfuffling going on at the moment about an exhibit by Jenn Villota…
This is a pic of me stood outside the gallery, because as will become very swiftly obvious if you pay a visit, the contents are unbelievably controversial. I couldn’t possibly print any of the images here, because they’d probably make you very uncomfortable indeed. Having said that, these works deal with themes that art has featured over thousands of years; sex, death and conflict. Jenn chooses to portay these subjects as viscerally and blatantly as possible, using photographs taken in Second Life and enhanced using some sort of toolset that I have no comprehension of. The result is a juxtaposition of beautifully rendered photographs that feature pornographic, challenging and downright nasty images. I wandered around the exhibit with my virtual and real life gobs agape in wonder at what I was seeing…If you decide to take a visit be warned, these pictures aren’t for the faint-hearted and there was even a couple that made me go ‘Eww!’
That said, the work is astonishing. Love it or loathe it, this is art that will cause shockwaves in Second Life but for all the right reasons. I’m glad that Second Life can be used by artists to create such startling work, and although I can’t say that Jenn’s creations feature themes that resonate with me, I recognise that this is the way that she chooses to express herself as an artist and more power to her for doing so, especially because she created her work within the confines of our wonderful metaverse. Whilst I was there I bumped into Jenn and she was gracious and really lovely to chat to..you may find that a surprise when you see some of the twisted imagery on display..
Here’s the Second Life Herald article that led me to visit the gallery, and click here for an SLURL. Be warned, it’s not for the faint hearted, but i strongly suggest that you visit. Why? Because art creates opinions, creates debate, and most importantly of all it makes us consider what we are witnessing in real life that has lead the artist to develop such a creation, and the wider implications of it. It’s powerful, and thought-provoking stuff indeed.
Haven’t been to Dutch Touch for a while- my bad, because as stores go it offers seriously fresh goodies for the savvy shopper. I’ve always held the seperates in high esteem from there..in particular jackets, tops and skirts, but I’ve never invested in Dutch Touch hair until today, and it will be something I wear more often. Dutch Touch have released a number of new styles to celebrate their opening at Willow Beach. The styles aren’t usual Kittywear, BUT as soon as I tried the demos I fell head over heels in love. One of the most exciting things are the combinations of colour (Copper + pink anyone? Sounds ewww but works very well!) and I especially love the styles that feature woollen beanie hats. Eefje is my absolute fave, the hair frames the face beautifully and there’s a lovely twisted bun/plait effect peeking out at the back. It looks lovely, and I simply adore the hat…I’m desperate for a hat like this one in real life! (I live in the UK, so if anyone knows where I can get a similar one please tell me!) I’m wearing it teamed with one of the latest releases from Snatch, ‘Lesser Evil’ and Ivey has excelled herself yet again. She’s picked a wonderful palette of colours for the season and her clothing works extremely well with this Dutch Touch hair…I’ve mixed in a scarf and my panjen gloves to finish the look which is perfect for mooching around some of the chillier parts of the grid. The festive season is starting to kick in, with lots of snowy sims and ice skating galore…yay for Winter!
( Sung to the choon of ‘Video Killed the radio Star’ by The Buggles)
Yay! I was on Woman’s Hour this morning so got to speak to the delectable Jenni Murray- her voice really is lovely:) It was great fun actually! I miss radio..wish I’d got my arse in gear when I was a kid…(sigh)Of course afterwards you always think of things that you’d like to have said, and I feel that I didn’t quite say enough really, but I was concious that I didn’t want to waffle and try and keep my points concise.
Anyway, if you want to have a laugh, here’s the blurb from the Radio 4 website:
Where does real life begin and end?
As web chat rooms, forums and virtual worlds become more popular, the opportunity for meeting new people online has never been greater. Virtual worlds are in many ways similar to the real world, offering characters the chance to be part of a community, form new relationships, and even get married. But where does the boundary lie between online and real world relationships? Is cheating in a virtual world ever grounds for divorce? Jenni is joined by Lisa Millar, a virtual world player, Tim Guest, author of Second Lives, and social psychologist Dr Monica Whitty.
And here’s the link, from which you can ‘Listen Again’:
I’m stunned that they’ve asked me to participate. Out of all the wonderful blogs on the internet that discuss Second Life and issues pertaining to it, the fact that mine was spotted has of course been a real ego-boost, and I’m really excited about speaking to Jenny and her other interviewees. The participants are Monica Whittey who studies virtual worlds out of Nottingham University and Tim Guest, esteemed author of ‘My Life in Orange’ and ‘Second Lives’ (a book that sits upon my real life bookshelf!) so I’m eager to hear their contributions. I hope I get the chance to get a word in edgeways, and I’m going to strive to ensure that I don’t come across as sounding like a complete pleb. Obviously I don’t want to sound like some sort of nutter who spends all her life pretending to be a virtual character( even though I do!) but hey, this is a perfectly reasonable hobby to participate in and it’s given me lots of personal satisfaction and success. I’m sure other people are as passionate about stamp collecting. Ahem.
Obviously I work in real-life but my boss has very kindly granted me leave so that I can drive over to Radio Sheffield in the morning and take part *LIVE* in the show. I understand that our segment will be first, and I believe the interview will last about ten minutes. I’m probably going to sound a bit silly here, but I take all this relatively seriously (snigger) and will do my utmost to make sure that the subject is treated respectfully, and .with that in mind I promise not to say pissflaps or go all giddy with excitement:)
So dear reader, if you’d like to have your illusions shattered and hear Kitty O’Toole in real life (mad northern bird alert!) then tune in to ‘Woman’s Hour’ on BBC Radio 4 at 10am tomorrow morning! EEP! You can also visit the Woman’s Hour website to access the ‘Listen Again’ feature if you can’t listen live (no guesses for what I’ll be doing when i get home then!) or alternatively download as a podcast.
(Wanna know the sad bit about this? The one person who I’m excited about telling all this to is no longer with us anymore. When something really exciting happens you always want to share with it with your best friends, and I can so imagine how chuffed and excited Dee would be. It’s at times like this that I really feel her loss especially keenly)
(I would have thought of a better title for this blog entry, but alas it’s late,I’m a tad pickled and well, I just can’t be bothered on a Tuesday much, know what I mean? Let’s face it, Tuesdays are LOTS worse than Mondays…ahem.)
Mooching around the various Second Life blogs I spotted an entry from ‘Virtual Neko’ which sent me scurrying like a kitten demented ( here’s a visual for you: a cat that’s just stuck it’s bottom on a warm wall in Summer, only it was a bit *too* hot. With me? Good) over to the store that she was blogging about. Useless Kitty that I am, for some reason ‘Atomic Kitty’ has never bipped on my radar before, but I hope I’ve made up for my ignoarance in that respect. It will surely be at the top of my Neko listings in future..because it is KITTYLICIOUS! I don’t stick my cat ears, tail and whiskers on very often, I have to be in the mood for it, but this is a store that would certainly appeal to those who live a constant kitty-cat lifestyle. Aimed squarely at the Neko culture, this store sells items that will basically make you look like the cat’s whiskers (Get used to the puns guys-I’ve been drinking again and that always helps) and then some! We’re talking fashion, furnishings, skins shapes and my favourite item from the store-EYES. Now, I only usually ever wear eyes by Miriel Enfield, because they are puurrfeeccct for me (snigger) *BUT* I think I’ve just fallen in love with the delicious range that Atomic Kitty has to offer. The best part about this is ‘Virtual Neko’ blogged a sale of GARGANTUAN proportions that means half-price store cards and goodies galore (I would tell you about this in detail but seeing as Virtual Neko blogged about it in far more detail and in a much more professional way I think that it’s only fair you visit her blog for the links and details)I dunno if it was the Chardonnay but I seemed to stumble around the store a tad and ended up buying a skin which is very lovely BUT alas the wrong-pigging one..sigh. Don’t drink AND Second Life is the motto here y’all..ahem. Anyway, you need to tip-toe in a cat-like fashion over to Atomic Kitty. If you do Neko in any way shape or form you’re missing a treat if you don’t check it out, and even if you don’t do the Neko I’d still suggest a visit, because a lot of the sublime wares available will appeal to grungey/rocky/cyber and emo types as well. See, something for everything! Versatile, me…(hic!)..Note to Kitty..don’t blog when inebri-inibr-inabri-pissed…hence the slightly blurry effect on the picture above. But just look at those eyes..divine huh? They’re called ‘Silver’ and cost L$100 for a pack of THREE ( dark, medium and light) and contacts too. In other words, a virtual-smeggin’-bargain, make no mistake! Click here unless you want to be forever condemned as a sad, furry trollop!
Last night Amanda turned up at my virtual pad, as she is want to do (she never knocks) and she looked *AMAZING*. Now, as you should all be aware by now, I don’t ‘do’ pink. I dislike it intensely. In fact, I think it should be banned! I was never into it as a girl, and certainly don’t like it as an adult. I’ve no idea what sparked the aversion but I swear to God it makes my teeth itch. Anyhoo, Shinjles turned up, decked out from head to toe in a rather snazzy pink ensemble, and because she looked so brilliant I wanted to share it with you here. Now, you may have spotted I’ve fannied about with the colours..this wasn’t really to reduce the pinkness, but because whilst I was playing around with the photo I discovered these fab and groovy settings which I think have resulted in rather an attractive picture! ( no, nothing to do with my refusal to have that much pink on my blog pages… ;P)
But back to the star of the show..Amanda. Even her tattoos are pink..seriously!..and it works perfectly on her. I really love the outfits she chooses, although of course her style for the main is quite different to mine, but there are similarities. For example, she’s wearing the ETD Laine hair that I peed my pants over last week, but, this being the Shinjles, she’s modded it to within an inch of it’s life using different shades of, yes, pink. It does look look great though, and worn with her snazzy robot hoody, skirt, braces and cracking wristwear ( turntable watch anyone?) all makes for a look that’s just pure ‘Second Life’. You know what I mean..touches of cyber, touches of Neko…all mashed up into a virtual pink frenzy! Anyways, here’s to you Miss Cyberpink. You may bring me out in a rash when you’re within ten virtual feet of me, and you have a tendency to make my eyes bleed-but hey, at least you look stylish whilst doing it!
‘House of Nyla’, by the rather wonderful Nyla Cheeky, is a fashion house I don’t visit nearly enough, but there is a valid reason for this. I know if I go there I won’t be able to eat for a month, seriously! Nyla is a content creator with a difference, she creates beautiful clothes in REAL LIFE and not just in the second, which adds an authenticity and an edge to her wares that you don’t really find elsewhere. If you want to be blown away by her real life creations, click HERE-the lass is a bloody genius!
I’d like to think she’d called her latest release ‘Kitty’ after yours truly, but that would be completely untrue..she’s named it after the stunning Leopard print fabric that is the inspiration for this figure-hugging virtual beauty…Deceptively simple, featuring draping around the hips and a halter-neckline with ties that fall down the back. It comes in a variety of sensational colours-blue, purple, pink, red and yellow and is going to be one of the hottest frocks of the festive season. As if the dress wasn’t enough, it also arrives replete with a pair of divine matching pointy heels with ickle bows on the heel…weee! It’s a seriously sexy outfit that I’ve teamed with ETD hair, Sn@tch gloves and Redgrave earrings. At L$750 it isn’t cheap, BUT it’s a definite investment…AND if you want to see true designer dedication, check out this link, where you can see Nyla in real life! Ain’t she amazing?
PMSL@ the BBC’s article about sexual relations within Second Life..
The article is called ‘How do avatars have sex?’
As you’d expect it’s as unbiased and really well-researched as all previous articles about Second Life that the BBC have published. ( Check out the very last sentence…someone try explaining Furries to these people will you? *Sigh*)
