Now it’s not very often that I make demands on you, my dear reader, but that’s EXACTLY what I’m going to do today. Once you have finished reading, I want you to go to Tribute Island. If you don’t, well I may just have to reconsider our friendship! In all seriousness though, no pictures I post here can do this glorious place justice, so you do indeed have to go and see it for yourself. The idea behind it is staggeringly simple;the island itself serves as a celebration of those we have loved and lost. That includes British servicemen and women who have died in the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is a very moving recreation of a military cemetery and each of the white tombstone’s has a real name engraved upon it. There are also dedicated areas to scientists, writers, actors and actresses, film directors, comedians and sporting personalities. The common denominator is that they all meant something to us individually, and the island serves to remind us of them. It’s not morbid in the slightest, and I guarantee that some of the exhibits will bring a grin to your face-what better a way is there to remember someone if not with a smile? I don’t want to tell you too much about it because so much of the fun of the island is in the discovery, but you really shouldn’t miss the cinema, the b-movie haunted crypt or the opportunity to discover your avatar’s DNA sequence. There is also a re-creation of the ‘Princess Diana Memorial Fountain’ and a tube station which serves to remind us of those who passed on 07/07 in London, and the victims of the Kings Cross fire. There is a monorail which will take you around the island (and unlike some in SL this one actually works!) so you can dis-embark at places that look interesting. You will easily lose an afternoon here, and I think it is utterly wonderful. PLEASE go and see it!
