RL vs SL -Why SL is better. Part 1-Moving House.

RL vs SL -Why SL is better. Part 1-Moving House.

  1. No stupid daft money grabbing estate agents, you go and find a house you like, take it home, rez it and voila! Easy as Pie:)
  2. Should you grow to dislike aformentioned house, you get another one.  Simple.
  3. The boxes you use can be deleted after you’ve unpacked rather than re-cycled or thrown into landfill! (Eco Kitty ahoy!)
  4. No issues with damp/double glazing/central heating.  No need for any dodgy electricians or plumbers.
  5. If you don’t like the colour/texture of *ANYTHING* in said house you can change it (Provided it’s Mod/Copy.  I know copy ain’t a prequisite on that but PLEASE make them or you will cry. Lots.)
  6. You will NEVER have to dust/vacumn/do the laundry/cook breakfast/boil a kettle/make the beds or do anything remotely domesticated UNLESS you want to.  (This is why tonight while I’ve been re-arranging my furniture in my happy shiny new love house I’ve laid out cooking paraphernalia that would put Nigella to shame.  Even though I HATE cooking and Jez cooks every night for us in RL. I also have an iron and ironing board in SL..go figure that one out, because I hate bloody ironing.  The day they invent truly creaseless clothing will be the day I run around my town centre stark bollock naked screaming ‘Hullabulloo!’ at the top of my lungs.)
  7. You can put completely mad/random things in or on your house and *no-one* will batter an eyelid.
  8. Re the last point, it doesn’t even have to be a house.  It can be a teapot. A Wellington boot. A giant purple llama. Whatever floats your boat!

I’ll be posting pictures of my new residence shortly.  It’s ever so exciting- I love arranging the furniture and objects.(Although I swear I’ve lost some stuff from my inventory over the past couple of days..anyone else had that issue?)

Re last point I was RIGHT! Check this out, but alas it hasn’t made a pootle of difference, so I’m going to have to raise a support ticket.  Remember my posts on Kaneva recently? Let’s see how good to go the Lindens are at dealing with inventory issues….

Thoughts and jottings on big business in SL…

Thoughts and jottings on big business in SL…

I really wanted a snazzy title for this pretence at intelligence on my part, but alas, not a witty thought or suitably rude word has popped into my bonce.  So you’ll just have to have it vanilla…

The huge multi-national company that I work for is currently exploring ‘Second Life’, and virtual worlds.  You kind of take it for granted that companies in the IT industry  will want to exploit new technology and virtual happenings as soon as they become viable (and fashionable) but in reality it isn’t as easy as it sounds.  You would think that SL would be a perfect virtual environment to exploit by big business, and in theory it is, but it’s actually a problematic one. There are so many things to consider for a start.  Security is of paramount importance for a start.  If you have a big business then you’ll have a big network, with an equally big firewall to boot,  and they are a huge problem to get around and a costly one at that.  Additionally, what is a business presence in SL suited for? Well, it has a great publicity value and there’s the novelty of being in a virtual world ( how cool is it to drop by an office in world and deposit your CV into a virtual mailbox?)..BUT..once that novelty wears thin, is there any practical benefit? I’ll be honest- I don’t think there is YET  and I think RL businesses may be getting wise to this too.  After all, we’ve recently  seen  Pontiac leave SL behind.
You could argue that SL can enable people to attend meetings from wherever they are in world.  Ok, that’s a good idea, and in principal of course it’s entirely possible but can it  genuinely meet business needs such as  facilitating powerpoint presentations?  No, not really, what if the lag monster got you stuck on a slide or your meeting was  suddenly interrupted by thousands of bouncing Mario’s courtesy of your friendly neighbourhood griefers.   (There is a virtual answer better suited to business-Qwaq, but it has none of the bells and whistles that makes Second Life so visually attractive)So let’s look at it from the green perspective- obviously you can see that it would have it’s advantages there.  No daily commute so therefore no petrol emissions for a start, but hang on a minute, don’t forget that  your avatar has a carbon footprint as well! (Oh yes it does,  you run your PC on electricity, and think of all those servers running Second life) That doesn’t even include the operator behind the av, who needs heat and light and boils the kettle and flushes the loo on a regular basis as well. Is this virtual life a greener alternative?   You can offset your avatar, as I’ve previously blogged, but is it really correct to  that virtual worlds will revolutionise business in the real world in the very near future?  My honest opinion is that I don’t think it will straight away…BUT  we’re well on the way to getting there so it IS important for global brands to at least take tentative steps to get their feet through the virtual door.  With that in mind I think that 2008 is going to see even more big names in our world getting ready for when virtual living can revolutionise the way we work. Until then, I’m going to enjoy it as a way to rest and play.  Besides it’s a much less calorific alternative to Mars bars….

I love landscaping I do..not…

I love landscaping I do..not…

Bear with me..I’m having one of my verbal rambles.  Quite honestly I don’t know how people do it..it must be a genetically inherited super-ability that enables the lucky few to create some of the  beautiful things that ‘Second Life’  is absolutely festooned with. I’m starting to view our metaverse as a living artwork, which may sound a tad pretentious especially coming from me, but bear with me on this point.

Have you ever looked at your surroundings properly? Wherever you rez in world next-do it. Obviously if you appear somewhere horribly festooned with ad-boards and miscelleneous nastiness you could be forgiven for thinking my remaining marbles have left the building. Piffle! If you haven’t ever wandered around some of the sims in SL with your gob open in astonishment then you deserve to be banned from the world for life.  BUT beware, sometimes your gob falls open for all the wrong reasons too- yes there are some fine builds, but there are some bloody awful things out there too.  Which is why it’s so important that the good designers are recognised in world….

A few (MAD) people in the past once suggested that I lend my hand to content creation…now, after I picked myself up off the floor and removed my lungs from the wall (They left a stain, Jez will KILL me if he spots it) I explained that I have neither the patience nor the intelligence to be able to create in the way that say, Praddles can. I don’t have those skills, and I’d rather pay someone for an astoundingly beautiful object that stick up a half-arsed attempt made by myself. ( I wish more people thought like me! well, actually on the other hand, perhaps not)Prad (Pravithi) designed ‘The Crown and Pearl’ bar, and it is just beautiful.  He’s also part of the design duo that is ‘PRim Designs’, and with his gorgeous colleague and fellow designer Rrish he’s featured in this months ‘Prim Perfect’ magazine.

I think you should take a visit and see what can be created when you put your mind to it.  This store is the dogs cogs, the mutts nuts..it makes Ikea look like Poundstretcher.  I wish I could sit on the sofas that they’ve made there in RL, but alas I can’t.  (TBH I couldn’t afford those sofa’s in RL so it’s nice that I get to enjoy them in world.) It comes as no suprise when you learn that Praddles is studying to be an architect in the real world, and I think he has one helluva future ahead of him.

There is a point to this mad ramble.  I’ve bought a ruddy huge house today and am currently landscaping my island around it and it is driving me quite mad. It’s bloody hard work.  I hate it that the land ripples and squirms around when you try to flatten it.  I hate it that when you plant trees they look fine from a distance but when you get up close to them they are in mid-air. It is a ruddy challenge and a half for me.  BUT I’m persevering, because although I hate the landscaping part, I LOVE positioning the furniture and making the inside look great. I once described SL to a friend as ‘Dolls Houses for grown ups’, and I still believe that there is an element of truth to that.  I loved nothing more than playing with my dolls houses as a kid, arranging the furniture, painting the walls…taking it all out and starting all over again. It was the best fun:) So even though I’m having a moan, I know that I’m going to have loads of fun furnishing my new place and I’m hoping that because I’ve given them a mention that Rrish and Prad will give me a discount;P  (No I have no morals, yes I sold my soul to Satan long ago…)

Seriously, checkout the latest edition of ‘Prim Perfect’ and see what can be achieved in a virtual world when you put your real mind to it.

JellyBean makes cool videos!

JellyBean makes cool videos!

I’d never heard of ‘Jellybean Madison’ until about 20 minutes ago..now I’ve watched most of her movies on ‘Youtube’ and consider myself a bit of a fan:) She’s been filming various dances created by ‘Sine Wave’ and I was gobsmacked by her results..I’ll be adding some of her films to my vodpod very shortly, and adding Jelly’s blog to my blogroll.  If I could get in world I’d probably go and buy some but hey, the grid is playing silly buggers *yet* again….Suffice to say, these are some of the best dances that I have ever seen in SL.  Fluid and utterly awesome, I *need* some of them desperately! Perhaps on second thoughts it’s a good job I can’t get in world, as I’m sure you can guess what I’d be doing!
