Oculus Rift dismisses SL as ‘The Underbelly’?! (Avatar Blogger Crossfit Challenge (Entry 9 of 30))

Gotta love Draxtor for bringing focus to an article about Oculus Rift that’s served a substantial diss to Second Life.

If you don’t know what Oculus Rift is, it’s a high field of view (FOV), low-latency, consumer-priced virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) unit that is currently in development, and Linden Labs have confirmed that they’re in possession of a developers kit and are investigating ways that this will enhance the Second Life experience. (Read more about the device on the wiki-page from where I unashamedly lifted this paragraph!)

This piece of tech is going to be immense when it launches for all kinds of gaming and virtual environments, least of all Second Life, so any interviews with the creators are always met with interest and enthusiasm.

This particular interview however has been met with a substantial amount of dismay from Second Life residents for the way our metaverse is so swiftly dismissed using the same old sweeping statements that we’ve heard so many times before, get ready because you know the kind I mean. “The Underbelly of the internet” is how it’s referred to by Nate Mitchell, a co-founder FFS! For someone behind such a forward-thinking creation as Oculus Rift this statement is alarmingly backwards, and ignorant.

Draxtor has requested that we post comments in support of our virtual world, which I have done  but it’s so disappointing and narrow minded to continue to view Second Life in the way it’s mentioned in this article.  I am VERY disappoint.

In fact it’s lazy, and borderline offensive offensive for the thousands of avatars who use Second Life for educational, social and recreational purposes. Draxtor’s work alone proves how irresponsible and plain silly Nate’s view is.

Of course many of these individuals will be future patrons of the device.  I myself have been determined to get one to use in Second Life since I heard  the project announced. I know it won’t be cheap but I want one so badly.  I’m not the only person who will be purchasing an Oculus Rift either, something I think the creators need to bear in mind.

Second Lifers have lots of cash to spend as we prove on a regular basis; we should be courted as potential customers rather than looked down upon as perverts of the worst kind.

It’s a LONG time since I did a look of the day post..but I was inspired by the offerings on sale at the latest Collab88, which it must be said is an absolute corker.

The inspiration is the 1990’s, so think zingy colours and taste flying out of the window.  I’m talking Global Hypercolour tees (they’re BACK!) Sweater Shop jumpers (Now being sold as vintage, the Hipsters LOVE them!)  Shell-suits (JUST SAY NO!) and Color-Me-Bad! (Oh dear!)

I had a VERY quick rummage at C88 and instantly fell in love with this glorious dress from

Teamed with my wonderful friendship bracelets from Boom at The Arcade (Have I got in yet? Don’t be silly!!) and this luscious ‘Bad Reputation’ hair from Exile and I think my look is very 1980’s rather than 1990’s, but I care not a jot because I LOVE IT!

You know I really do think it’s a fantastic time to be an avatar in-world at the moment.  There is so much fantastic fashion to be found, teamed with some exquisite building work; I’ve not been this enthused about SL for a LONG time!

If you want to emulate the look I’m sporting above, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Shape: Mine, not for sale.
  • Skin: Ava BB 2 in Medium – Belleza
  • Eyes: Destiny Eyes in ‘Maya’ (Group Gift) – Ikon
  • Hair: ‘Bad Reputation’ (Fusion 2) – Exile
  • Dress: {U.F.O} ‘Who cut off my sleeve?’ dress in black – C88
  • Jewellery: {Yummy} Ball Chain Necklace – C88
  • Lashes: ‘Flirt’ by Hush
  • Hands: ‘Casual’ by Slink
  • Manicure: ‘Classic’ by Izzie’s

There’s so much going on in-world at the moment!

It really feels like the past few months have seen an explosion in sales and events.

On the whole, I think this is a GOOD thing, provided that the quality is there. On the whole I think it is, but sometimes I truly despair at mesh items that are poorly textured and placed for sale. Come on guys, if you’re expecting people to buy your item you have to put the effort in!

I also equally despair at seeing RL logos on clothing in-world. This week I’ve seen Reebok, Chanel and Adidas at a number of events. It’s not only rather pointless, and lazy, it’s also rather silly; these are trademarks and you’re infringing copyright by reproducing them in world without permission.

I’d far rather an imaginative logo from an in-world store anyway; we’re in a virtual world, so why do we need real world logos?

Strawberry Singh’s latest meme is all about acrostic poetry.

I’ve not dabbled in this since I was in junior school, a very long time ago, so it was great fun. A challenge, but entertaining nontheless!

Here’s my creation for your reading pleasure, ahem:

Kindness and caring are this Kitty’s thing,

Is it really so hard to be nice?

Truth is for some it’s a pretty big deal,

Those drama-avatars who’re ‘keeping it real’

You’re so cold with your hearts full of ice!

“Oh really?” You say spilling negative vibes,

“This attitude makes me a star!”

Of course I respond to your immature lies,

“Obviously it will help you go far..”

Learn to respect all your Second Life friends,

Empathy proves who you actually are.

I tried to keep it Second Life themed, and it ended up becoming a jab at those avatars whose sole aim in their second lives is to be bitchy and dramatic. I’m sure you’ve encountered them by now!

There is a ridiculous amount of drama in SL.  It’s the only thing that spoils the environment in my mind. I honestly cannot deal with it, and never understand it.

Do people think because they are pixels on a screen that they need to leave their manners at log-in?

I’m exactly the same in my second life as I am in my real life.  That means I treat everyone how I want to be treated, with respect. Surely that’s not so hard to do?
