Kitty Quicky- Following on from my last post…

I‘ve just been informed by a reader that CURIO and LAQ are next to each other at Skin Fair:) ( My two faves- yay!)

Curio features the following skins in it’s booth: Jasmine, Sweetheart, Yum II and Pout. Apparently there are bloody fabulous…grr. This does NOT lessen my pain.

There’s also a freebie of glossy pouty lip over-lays in store too!  Wee!

LAQ  features a new skin called Susan for the ladies, and apparently a swoonsome male skin called ‘Emmett’.  Of course skin fair is FULL of fabulousness this year so go along and enjoy and support the skin makers of Second Life, because they’re more than worth it. We’d be rubbish without them!

Here’s your taxi!

Nothing frosty about this ‘Ice Queen’

Nothing frosty about this ‘Ice Queen’

(My titles get worse.)

I would sell my soul for L$3k right now…

Because I’ve just discovered ‘Ice Queen’ at Curio and it’s made me so happy that I have wet myself. Seriously. ( Yes, I know it came out before Christmas but I’ve just discovered it now OK, and I’m blogging about it regardless because it is sodding amazing!

I’m a very set in my ways. Once I find a formula that works, it’s rare that I stray from that. For me, skins are crucial to my look in Second Life, and I’ve been a fervent supporter of (chiefly) LAQ and Curio for a long time. I love both of them, but my pocket-book is way more inclined towards the LAQ new releases because they are always so reasonably priced. LAQ provides a first rate product, with masses of sublime detailing and make-up options so why should I shop elsewhere? Well, truth be told, as much as I adore LAQ, my truest skin love is a different brand entirely.

I used to wear only ONE brand of skins and that brand was Curio. As much as I love my LAQ, let me tell you this: NOBODY DOES IT BETTER THAN GALA PHOENIX. (Cue Carly Simon)
In the recent past I coveted my collection of Curio skins and kept them close to my heart. They suited my shape perfectly and the detailing upon them was, is, and always will be so damn near perfect as to make butterflies sob into their morning cornflakes. (Note: I am not entirely sure that butterflies eat cornflakes, but if they did they would garnish them with tears of joy. Perhaps that’s where the frosting on Frosties comes from, butterfly tears? Ahem..) And then I lost my entire collection in ‘Kitty’s Great Inventory Calamity’ at the end of 2009.

I lost so much in that disaster that I’ve still never recovered from it in terms of the volume of items in my inventory to this day. It’s a shadow of it’s former self still.

As for my Curio collection? It couldn’t be retrieved, sob, and with each pack costing L$3000 no chance of a replacement loomed on the horizon. ( I reckon I must have lost..gulp..at least L$16k of skins) That’s pretty much how it’s remained too. Fortunately Gala takes her time when creating her perfection, which means in the intervening months, if you are able, you can put aside a few Lindens for when her new collections strike. I’d like to say that’s something I’ve been able to do, but alas I’m not Linden heavy so it’s been beyond my reach to do that, with all my dollars spent on tier and rent. But I tell you one thing, when I win the lotto I’m buying the bloody store out three times over…

(Click to enlarge-believe it or not the hair used in this is hiding in your library!)

So, ‘Ice Queen’. This is Acorn, my fave shade of Curio skins. You’ll have to forgive the demo lines on the skins that I’m wearing for reasons explained above, but this is a seriously sensational skin set. For a start, I LOVE the make-ups included in the pack. Gala always provides quality make-ups in each release, and ‘Ice Queen’ is certainly one of her best. The lips are just nommilicious- if you have a fuller-lipped avatar then get ready for some serious Scarlett Johannsen pouting action. Zoom in and you can see the highlighting in different tones is damn near perfect, and the lips look moist and lickable:) (Ice Queen in ‘Charcoal 1’ is a great example of this) The quality is all reflected in the detail and that’s where Gala excels. For example-look at the shading *in* the nostrils, the shaping and detail *on* the earlobes (best ears in SL!) They’re just splendid. Clavicles, the nape of the neck, shoulder blades, cleavage and breasts, abdomen and belly-button all feature fantastic use of shading and highlight, as well as a skin texture that is just this side of real enough. Moles dot the skin on the back and belly adding that hint of authenticity, and the ladyparts look just the ticket ( Note: Ladyparts just aren’t important to me in SL. I don’t engage in naughtiness in-world so I just don’t pay any attention to them, but I’m pretty sure that these are more than sufficient!) Dammit, even her knees are perfect! Seriously, accuracy in places like this is really important for an avatar. Let’s say you work as a table-dancer in-world, you want your skin to look top notch from any angle and if you have a punter using mouse-look and his eyes are at knee level (or above!) let’s say he’s not going to be disappointed:) I can only fault one area really, and even that isn’t really valid when you consider it’s regarding an area that no-one has really nailed (hah!) yet in Second Life, and that’s hands and feet. The nails on the hands don’t really work, BUT it’s a minor critique all things considered.

On the whole Gala’s skins just don’t disappoint, and I just cannot help but be biased in my opinion of them. They’re glorious. So fly you fools, over to Curio castle and lavish your Lindens on this utterly fabulous skin set and revel in the swoons of the avatars who fall at your feet as you glide past. Ok, I’m over-egging the pudding a smidgen there, but you get the drift. Seriously, if you have the dosh you would be wise to throw it Gala’s way; the lass has indeed earned it! In the pack you get your base skin in two shades, dark and light, featuring six double-version make-ups   AND different coloured brows to match your hair, so this is a veritable treasure box of skin happy that will last you an age. Absolute value for money and then some!

(Note- I am totally aware that there is newness from Gala at Skin Fair but I am not a masochist so I’m not going. I know that she has released ‘POUT’ and ‘YUM 2’ because I’ve read all about it on her smashing blog,  but i figure If I don’t see it then I won’t have to sob into my pillow at night will I?)

PS The ever amazing Sasy Scarborough features ‘Ice Queen’ in her reviews at http://www.sasypants.com/you-aint-seen-the-best-of-me-yet/3372/  Go and take a peek and see what the queen of SL Blogs had to say about it!

She-Cat Sells Sanctuary….

She-Cat Sells Sanctuary….

( That’s a DREADFUL pun; I was trying to think of something epic and witty for this post title and I failed in the most epic of ways.  Apologies!)

Wildwood Breedables have launched their ‘Cat Sanctuary’, something that I have no doubt will prove immensely useful in curbing the over population and market saturation of these irrepressible cats, but there’s already a problem that’s certainly ruffling the fur of a few Wildwood fanatics.
But first of all, let me tell you about the actual programme. Like Bunnybury and Horse Haven Cat Sanctuary has evidently been designed to help breeders rid their surplus stock, and be rewarded for their ongoing breeding efforts. I’m pleased to note that it offers a very comprehensive array of rewards in exchange for tokens which you get by submitting a kitten/cat to the sanctuary.  It’s relatively straightforward; the older the cat, the more tokens you receive.

Kitten (Age: 0 to 4)- 1 Token

Cat (Age: 5 to 80)- 2 Tokens

Older Cats (Age: 90 to 119) – 3 Tokens

Retired Cats (Age: 120) – 4 Tokens

Traited Cats – 1 Token per trait PLUS the tokens rewarded above. (What’s considered a trait? Non-Common traits (Tail, Body, Shade, Ears), as well as eyes that are not found in starters. Pelts are not counted.)

When you have accrued a certain amount of points then you can visit the sanctuary, located at the Wildwood sim, and choose from the following:

5 Persnikitty Tokens – Kitty Care Kit (Basic)
15 Persnikitty Tokens – DELUXE Care Kit (1.3 Version Cats and Up)
35 Persnikitty Tokens – Persnikitty Treats (5% Energy)
40 Persnikitty Tokens – Amour Bites (5% Desire)
45 Persnikitty Tokens – Kat Nip Sack (10% Energy)
100 Persnikitty Tokens – Amour Delight (10% Desire)
200 Persnikitty Tokens – Persnikitty *PET* Food (5 Dishes)
400 Persnikitty Tokens – Persnikitty *BREEDER* Food (5 Dishes)
450 Persnikitty Tokens – Persnikitty Happy Pack (8 Happiness Boosters)
1000 Persnikitty Tokens – Cat Sanctuary Elegant Basket (Cat Sanctuary Plush)

I really like the fact that they’ve started with low token numbers so that even if you submit just a few cats you can still see some benefit.  Of course, I’m sure most people will be motivated by the rewards on offer in exchange for the larger sums of tokens.  For example, 1000 persinikitty tokens will take some hard work but the promise of a special Cat Sanctuary Plush will make it a challenge I know a lot of Wildwood enthusiasts won’t be able to resist. (Are you reading this Vere Noyes?)

But when I started this post I mention that there was a problem; a fly on the kitty litter if you will. Wildwood has decided that you can’t put a sick cat in the sanctuary.  Now, if like myself you’ve stored cats in your inventory in anticipation of the sanctuary’s eventual emergence then you’re bound to be a wee bit irked that to submit any of your stored cats to the sanctuary means you will have to fork out and purchase  a healing kit to heal the cat first prior to submitting it to sanctuary. Think about this: in some cases people will have so many sick kitties in their inventory that it would just be way too expensive to heal them all, rendering their participation in the scheme effectively pointless.  As you can imagine there is fierce debate about this in both group chat and the official forums. If you were a large-scale breeder with an expansive collection of sick kitties then I can imagine you’ll feel more than a bit  aggrieved by the situation, and for a smaller breeder like myself it’s also not really going to serve me any major benefit to heal and birth any cats in my inventory. Even though the quality of the rewards on offer are good they’ll take some achieving.  At the most I estimate I’d achieve 40 tokens which would get me a pack of Amour Bites, which I’ve never bothered with anyway.

For me it’s not really worth the hassle, because that’s the other point about all this, you have to birth each basket and name each cat you want to submit  before rezzing it next to a totem which then whisks your cat away to the sanctuary. If you have a small amount of cats and baskets then it shouldn’t really be too much hassle, but when I tried  it worked twice for me and then I started to experience issues.  I tried re-rezzing the totem a few times, as well as a complete  re-log but this made no difference so to be perfectly honest I just gave up.

As regular readers will know I’m a huge fan of Wildwoods, and I think Cat Sanctuary is a very necessary asset to the community, BUT I personally feel the decision to not allow the submission of sick kitties is wrong. Even worse, I think  this decision has the potential to cause backlash amongst breeders, who can of course be a fickle bunch as we’ve seen with other animals on the grid.   I’ve had a nosey on the forums and there have been some really great suggestions from the community at large; for example, Pauline Darkfury commented that if Wildwood wouldn’t budge on their decision to allow sick kitties to be submitted to Cat Sanctuary, perhaps they would consider an amnesty where existing sick kitties could be submitted for a short time before the programme begins properly? This to me seems like a sound suggestion; giving the community a week to get their inventories cleared of baskets and sick cats is a very good idea as well as a huge PR win. Sadly, this was met with a negative from Wildwood, who pointed out in their response  that “There is always room for compromise and discussion, but we can’t guarantee it will go exactly as a customer wants..” Very true; and when all is said and done this is of course their (Wildwood’s) product, BUT they need to be mindful of the fall from grace of previous breedables due to their inability to take note of what their community asked of them.

And let’s not be too dramatic either; we’re only going to be talking a small minority of mega-breeders who would be wanting to push a shed-load of sick kitties the Cat Sanctuary’s way, so the hit on profits at the Wildwood side wouldn’t be that monumental.  In fact, going back to my previous PR win point, allowing people to get rid of their old cats will probably lead to them buying more new stock so the Lindens will still keep rolling in regardless.

I dunno. Perhaps profit isn’t the issue behind this, but Wildwood need to be mindful, as I’m sure they are, how decisions like this will be perceived in Second Life, especially now that the Kittycats are on the grid and the Wildwood lustre is starting to tarnish as people get excited about the next breedable launch… ( I’m telling you, at some point it’s going to be breedable chuffing zombies..I kid you not!)

Chantkare is up for a romp..

Chantkare is up for a romp..

Apparently the Old Costa Rica shopping district is the home to the most beautiful women in Second Life. I dispute this, because I don’t live there.

Anyway, moving somewhat swiftly on, they’ve had a bit of a tidy-up and to celebrate most of the ( very nice) stores have freebies out for you to snaffle up and enjoy. Fabfree does a great job as always of covering this gift-fest in more detail, but I really wanted to draw your attention to this romper suit that’s available from Chantkare. It put me in mind of Leona Lewis when worn with this Bea hair from Truth, along with accessories from Ticky Tacky and the NEW release gift skin from Belleza ‘Melissa’. Nice innit?
