Witchy Wednesdays /Jewelry Fair 2014 The Willow Necklace By Aisling

Snapshot_003 So Jewelry Fair 2014 kicks off on September 13th (my real-life birthday as well! WOOT!) and guys it is going to be great. I’ve had the privilege of having a sneaky wander around the rather excellent build and can tell you now, you need to get yourself some Lindens because there are some seriously stunning baubles and trinkets on display that you will NEED to buy.

It runs from Sept 13th-28th and you’ll find that all tastes and genres are accommodated perfectly well, and I’m pretty confident that there will be something for everyone on display. You’ll find a plethora of stunning jewelry from well-known and not so well known designers; from simple statement pieces to the more avant-garde items that Lady Gaga herself would be proud to sport.   As well as amazing necklaces there are tiaras, wedding and engagement rings, earrings galore, wristwatches, bracelets, bangles and all kinds of piercings too! It’s impossible for me to list every item, but I can assure you that your visit will not leave you disappointed.

Here’s an example of the awesome that awaits you.  This stunning necklace, ‘Willow’, features a pentacle set against the backdrop of a beautifully rendered tree with branches reaching skyward and roots pushing down into the earth below. (Click HERE for a better look)

It’s part of a collection that will be available at the event from AISLING called ‘Sortilege’. The necklace comes with a HUD so that you can change the metal colours of the necklace and you can re-size too.  Oh, and it’s materials enabled as well, meaning it will look even more  amazing when worn. If you’d like to check out other pieces in AISLING’s collection, take a peek at the Flickr feed HERE.

This piece isn’t available until the fair opens on Saturday, so I’m sort of cheating a bit by featuring it here today, BUT consider yourself warned in advance and make sure that you don’t miss out on this cracking piece of Pagan perfection when Jewelry Fair 2014 opens to the public.  (Note: this picture is a raw shot from SL that I haven’t enhanced in anyway, yes it is that gorgeous. Just like me:)

Witchy Wednes..oh stuff it. LOOK AT THIS!!!

Witchy Wednes..oh stuff it. LOOK AT THIS!!!

I missed my Witchy Wednesday blogging session yesterday, but I’m MORE than going to make up for it today (I hope!) by telling you about something AMAZING which was offered yesterday as part of the weekly ‘Hump Day Happiness’ gig…and is STILL AVAILABLE at Hump Day price until tomorrow, Friday. (Which means you haven’t got long to get one in my timezone, sorry!)The creator is Ivey Deschanel, better known to you and I as the uber-creatrix behind the Sn@tch brand. I’ve seen Sn@tch go from strength to strength over the years during my time in SL, and I know that Ivey works darn hard to make some of the most spectacular Goth/Alternative fashions on the grid. Put simply, you ain’t ever been shopping in Second Life UNTIL you’ve been to Sn@tch.

But I’d go so far as saying Ivey has excelled herself this time. Why? Because Ivey has made a mausoleum……

Exterior shot of the Mausoleum. Functional and tidy isn’t it?

And it’s rather f*cking fabulous. For 69L (I KNOW!!! Pick yourself up off the ground and dust yourself down..OK? Let’s proceed!) I became the owner of a rather glorious yet strangely simple concrete dwelling that would be perfect either on the ground or in the air as a skybox. Mausoleum sounds terrifyingly grandiose doesn’t it? But it’s not half as fancy as you would presume it to be, and that is why it works so effortlessly and is so bloody amazing to boot. Even better, Ivey’s applied the same logic that she applies to her clothing creations so that means quality and functional design embellished with lots of NOM, and I simply have to tell you all about it.

Interior shot of the downstairs featuring the fireplace..I’ve splashed some Witchy around..

The structure is two-story dwelling with a balcony. Nothing remarkable there, but it starts to evoke a Necropolictic ( I don’t *think* that’s a word, but it works so shush) air as soon as you walk toward it. There are a pair of faboosh metal-swing gates that open outwards towards you, and they’re so evocative that in my Kitty-mental head I can hear them spooky-squeaking as they move..I kid you not!! Yes, I make my own sound effects people…anyway, moving on… Above your head as you walk in hangs an Absinthe green gas light, and as you mount the steps you’re overcome with a feeling of…ok, enough of the Edgar Allen Poe. When you walk in you’re directly opposite a fireplace. Nothing fancy here but prime for decorating with your skulls and candles and zombie brains in jars.
You get my drift huh? There are logs crackling and spitting in the hearth ( there goes my mental again, making sound effects up!) and it’s got a load of potential to make into a really special focal point in the room. In fact, the space around you is AMPLE for whatever needs you may have, and Ivey has even supplied a one-prim bookcase to start you off decorating the place a bit. There’s a bearskin rug included too, perfect for laying in front of the fire as you read a grimoire by candlelight..again, a candle has been provided in the total package by Ivey, BUT all these items are optional, you don’t have to use them. Considerate, eh? One thing that I really do rate are the choice of textures that Ivey has deployed in the interior. I love the cracked-plaster effect upon the walls and although Gothically inclined the build is not so dark as to make the space seem plain and boring. She’s made really effective choices for the window texture too..I love it. For the price she could have gotten away with just black walls but she didn’t. Kudos to Ivey for that. Moving upstairs takes you into another large open space. There are two features here that really made me *wow* First up is the stained glass window which felt as though it came out of a Depeche Mode video circa ‘Songs Of Faith And Devotion’ ( If you’re a DM fan you’ll get EXACTLY what I mean, in fact with that in mind it would make a great hangout for a DM fan..hang some pictures of Dave up on the walls..you get the drift) The second is the large window opening out onto a balcony. Ivey has provided some black curtains for you to hang here and they’re super effective and atmospheric as they drift in the breeze.

Another shot of the upstairs area. It’s a great space to work in!

Alas I am TOTALLY prim-skint these days and I’m having to jiggle my objects around my land so that I can best enjoy them, but it struck me that this build is a perfect Witchy hide-out. It’s large enough to hold meetings in for starters, including circle work, and decorated with all your witch-wares ( from stores that I’ve featured previously on the blog, natch) it would look utterly perfect. I have tried to give you a flavour for how good it could potentially  look by placing a few items from my collection in situ to give you a feel for the place, you can do so much with it. It would make a great club actually-the only limit is your imagination and your prim limits..oh how I hate those…<Kitty grumbles>

Guys, you NEED to see this yourself…so here’s a recap on ALL the deets:

Sn@tch ‘Angels Mausoleum’

Two story concrete pre-fab with iron gates, fireplace and balcony. Includes candles, plants bookcase, curtains, rug and Lamp. 75 prims unfurnished.

Of Witch & Wand, and Bell & Broom…

Of Witch & Wand, and Bell & Broom…

Hi everyone! I’ve been away for a few days in RL and haven’t been around to blog properly, so it’s time to make amends for that methinks! I have a couple more posts on my Witchy theme to share with you then back to normal service, with ‘Witchy Wednesdays’ running every week from the tenth of February onwards.

I’ve found another superb place in world which I truly feel is essential visiting for the Second Life Pagan. This has to be one of the best Pagan shopping experiences on the grid being imaginative and full to the brim of genuinely wonderful witchy wares. Not only that, the prices are excellent too.

In fact, I’m talking about two stores, located opposite each other and owned by Second Life friends Nahnee Adamski and Scojo Zanzibar. I’m going to begin by telling you about ‘Bell And Broom’, which is Scojo’s store, and he describes it as a ‘Modern Day Pagan Shoppe’. This store features some really nifty items and it’s well worth you taking the time to explore, so I recommend that you don’t rush if you can help it. As soon as you walk in the awesome goodies leap out at you; for starters there are reuseable spell candles priced at a VERY reasonable L$99. They’re scripted, so you touch them to write your intention which remains in place above the candle for 24 hours. They’re available in lots of different colours, making these the perfect choice for in-world candle magic, and at such a reasonable price you can afford to build up quite the collection! Opposite are the low prim cauldrons, priced from L$99, which come with touch on/off fire effect and are just the ticket for your witchy workshop. I would have preferred it if the interior of these was just black, rather than green, but as cauldrons go these are perfectly adequate. Walk further in to the store and you’ll find other candles that last 8 hours only before completely de-rezzing. Each is for a specific purpose, these are L$49 but you can buy a pack featuring 8 candles for L$199. Again, these are great value and perfect for more particular spell work. There’s also a really nifty novelty item in here, the ‘Magical Self-Cleaning Broom’, which is very ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ and would look perfect in your parlour.

Walk a little further and you’ll find altar bells, Goddess statues, skull candle holders and various signs. All of these are really well crafted, but some of the textures just don’t work for me. For example, I’d prefer a plain silver texture as the embellishment upon the Altar Pentacles, rather than the silver, bronze or gold with a semi-sparkly effect. It just puts me off. Plain would be a much better choice, or even better than that, texture change. The Goddess statues are perfect for your altar, and you’ll also find salt and water bowls here too, as well as smudge sticks and abalone shells. There are also a variety of wooden broomsticks here too for protecting your threshold, again these are absolutely spot on BUT the pentacle upon each is in that dratted sparkly silver texture. GAAHHH!

There are plenty of Altar arrangements on sale here. The ‘Three Prim Altar’ is very simple; featuring a lovely draped tablecloth and crystal in the centre. Again, I can’t say that I’m mad about the texture choice here, in this case for the table underneath the tablecloth. OK, it’s not *that* noticeable, BUT it’s a bit naff. In contrast, the tablecloths themselves are perfectly serviceable.

Next up are the complete altar kits; again a smashing idea BUT let down again by poor texture choices:( That said, these win plus points on the facility to remove or add pieces as you wish, and change individual item textures, including ancestral photographs, but the altars themselves aren’t so hot. Again, the opportunity to modify or choose from an appearance menu would pay dividends here, because they are really natty packages. Next to these are some meditation altars that ARE modifiable, with space for plenty of objects as you sit and ponder matters metaphysical in your sacred space.

There are some very pretty crystal balls on sale here too, and there’s a sign that actually states that the prices are currently reduced by 50%. I tend towards plain and simple but these are quite flamboyant in aspect, being available in a myriad of sizes and colours, so weren’t really for me. I did gravitate towards the black crystal ball but again I wasn’t keen on the texture deployed on the stand…you can guess what kind it was:) However I do rate the wee tables to either side of the display, available in either Rosewood or Aged style, these are resplendent with a starburst shaped surface meaning that they are perfect for housing statement pieces such as candles, crystal balls or statuary.

You’ll also find some pretty astonishing looking Grimoires here at ‘Bell And Broom’and at L$229 these are genuine investment pieces which are absolutely perfect if you have a coven or group in-world. These are transferable and can hold and dispense unlimited notecards. They also look the part too, and will have ‘Charmed’ fans peeing in their panties.(Note: There are a number of ‘Charmed’ themed items in this store, including jewellery and pre-cast circles) Unfortunately the books aren’t lockable, BUT you can purchase a humongous matching box to keep them in which does have a locking facility, so if you want to keep your virtual musings private perhaps it’s an idea to invest L$149 on one of those..

Other items to note in ‘Bell And Broom’ include an array of cloaks and hats, various metaphysical prints, jewellery and a range of coffins and tombs! These are pretty cool actually, I can’t say I’m fully in the loop on virtual caskets and all things un-dead but these are actually very smart, although the red one did remind me of a ‘Snap-On’ tool box…

Outside the store, moving towards ‘Witch And Wand’ you’ll see lots of seating, signage and various ritual items for sale. There’s also cave for you to explore, and various garden furniture items, including magical gazebos. I especially liked the ‘Winter Gazebo’ with its gently falling snowflakes. There are beautiful weather vanes and wind chimes too with which to decorate the outside of your home. You can also buy your very own purple labyrinth or Beltane May pole, a groovy magical mushroom ring or even a Zen garden. Something especially nice is the tribute garden to those who were executed at Salem after being falsely accused of Witchcraft, and you can visit here, light a candle and lay a flower at the memorial wall. It’s very touching to see a memorial like this created in-world and shows a lot of thought and dedication on the part of the sim owners.

Moving on to ‘Witch And Wand’ now, which is very similar to ‘Bell And Broom’ in that it carries some of the same ranges, BUT it also has lots to offer on its own. This store is Nahnee Adamski’s and just like at ‘Bell And Broom’ there are some spectacular items to be discovered here. I *LOVE* nick-knacks and wee objects that help add authenticity to your virtual home and you’ll find a vast array of goodies in-store that will do just that. For a start, I LOVE the Pentacle made from 5 crossed brooms as well as the Pentacle wall-shelf. A very nifty idea! It would be even better if the shelf was colour change, but it’s a great way to display your ‘precious things’. I also really like the various wands, wand holders and staffs which I thought were splendid little creations. The wands are of course wearable and although a wee bit ‘Harry Potter’ for my taste they are actually really lovely. The staffs are also very handsome, topped with either Amethyst or Mother of Pearl, my personal favourite.

Again there are various altars dotted all around the store. I didn’t really rate the majority of the actual altars, preferring the objects placed upon them instead, but I did like the storage boxes and I thought that ‘The Altar In A Box’ idea was really fabulous, everything you need in a beautiful box for L$600.

But here’s an odd thing; for some reason the store sells curtains, which seem at odds with the rest of the wares that are on display. These didn’t really work for me, BUT I did like the Pagan Prayer flags in assorted designs that are situated across from these textiles. Under the staircase you’ll see some more lovely wall and door hangings in various designs but they practically all feature that damned sparkly silver texture which, by this time as I’m sure you can tell, I was detesting more each time I saw it!

Moving on and behind the wall hangings are a range of tattoos featuring various Witchy and Voodoo artworks. These weren’t really to my taste but worth checking out if you like that sort of thing I guess. There are eyes on sale too which were much nicer but a tad too beady for me, so I carried on exploring and found myself in the fashion department. The Witch Boots are really posh, featuring tasselled embellishments and I also noted two rather dandy 2 prim gothic picture frames available to purchase too. The fashions here are traditional garb, and if gowns are your fetish then I do recommend that you check the range out here. Although they really aren’t my thing at all I have to say that the ‘Wench Dress’ and the ‘Spider Web Gown’ are really something special and are displayed on mannequins so you get the full benefit of the lavish skirting that completes each gown.

This is the section where you’ll find all the jewellery too and there are LOTS of different Pentagram necklaces at very reasonable prices, and some of them feature a far more normal silver texture than is the norm for this store, BUT yet again there’s that dratted sparkly texture everywhere. There are circlets for rituals available here too and they are some of the nicest I’ve seen on the grid thus far. This is also the only place I’ve found that offers Gardenerian degree necklaces, all perfectly represented and just the thing if you want to display your degree status. Note, to the left of these is a box which features the grand opening gift, so make sure you pick one of those up!

As I said before there’s a LOT of original thinking on display here and none more so than the rather sweet ‘Witch is in/Witch is out’ signs that you can use to park your broom. I really like these, you have to manually touch the sign to rotate it to reflect your status and the broom is removable too. At L$300 they are pricey, but make a nice finishing touch to the exterior of your property. But if I thought the curtains were random, then the Neko parts that are on sale here too are even more so! They seem adequate enough, but don’t have a witchy twist. Perhaps the ears could be pierced with Pentacles, and the tails could be decorated with miniature witch charms to create a more appropriate and original Neko range? I have no doubt that they’d be extremely popular. Oh, and you must check out the Altar supplies stand. It features pentacles, bells, spell jars and rather lovely bolines…it seems that everything is included here.

If you venture upstairs you’ll find more Gothically inclined items, including more curtains and a dining room set. There are also prints available, melted candles and skulls galore. Behind a partition you’ll find more prints and a couple of coffins too, these differ in design to the ones at ‘Bell And Broom’ and in my opinion they weren’t as good. But hey, you may prefer these.

To be perfectly honest, this sim is pretty much a one stop shop for all your Pagan needs, and I doubt that there is anything that these owner/creators haven’t considered making or have stashed in their respective inventories somewhere. With that in mind I insist that you visit because I can’t possibly do justice to both these stores upon this page, you have to see them to get the full benefit.

That said, I do think both Scojo and Nahnee need to rethink their texture strategies. Some (not all) of the textures deployed across the items are just plain ugly; the silvery texture I was constantly referring to throughout this item is especially unpleasant and looks very dated. In fact, I think some of the texturing choices will put a lot of purchasers off – it certainly did limit my spending which is such a shame because had the items in question been presented differently I could have quite easily bought most of the contents of both stores! Guys, if you’re reading this I don’t want to appear harsh, but please consider changing some of the textures you employ upon your lovely items because if you do, I can pretty much guarantee your sales will increase.

I also implore you to make more of your items MODIFY, this would come in handy with the altars and altar cloths, and items such as the labyrinth situated outside, which I almost bought for my own land until I noted that it wasn’t modify., and I didn’t fancy having a purple labyrinth on my garden! (Please consider deploying texture change scripts on some of your items to enable them to have a much wider appeal, and I’ll be back with my lindens ready like a shot!)

All things considered though, I wouldn’t fail to recommend this place to anyone seeking Pagan items in-world, and I heartily encourage you to visit it. Oh, and as a final note, you can also rent a home here just like at Covenstead, Artemis and Sacred Cauldron, but I’ll leave the discovery of the rental cottages up to you…suffice to say they are rather sweet Medieval numbers.

A Trip To Covenstead

A Trip To Covenstead

‘Covenstead’ describes itself as an active community of Spiritual People; Wiccans, Witches, Heathens, Magicians and followers of the Voodoo, Celtic and Asatru faiths, but it’s much more than that. It offers workshops, discussion groups, rituals and above all else the facility to mix with like-minded folk in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Ainsley Weatherwax and Jimmy Orsini have provided the grid with a wonderful space filled to the brim with shopping and interesting places to visit, including sacred places, quality dwellings to rent and above all else the facility to partake in Pagan activities.
When you rez at Covenstead, you’re in the middle of a terraced shopping area in front of a visitors centre. There are freebies inside (well worth checking out!) and lots of information about Covenstead, it’s environs and what it has to offer, which is rather a lot! The location is a very pretty, traditional ‘Olde worlde’ style build; think Medieval and Tudor buildings with a Germanic flavour and cobbled streets. You’ll also spy a horse and carriage; hop on and you can go for a guided tour around the sim. An excellent idea if you ask me!
The shopping here is obviously Pagan-centric, and you’ll find cloaks, cauldrons and masses of jewellery. There’s art and wall plaques to decorate your virtual pagan home, as well as gowns and more pentacles that you can shake a stang at. Take your time whilst you browse the shopping; some of the stores didn’t really strike me, but I found some quality items at a few stores which I’ll share with you now.
Let’s begin with ‘Oak Leaf Emporium‘, which has a stunning ritual outfit for sale at L$300. It’s called ‘Gaia’s Goddess’, and is traditionally beautiful. The outfit includes a sturdy silver Goddess headpiece, vest, skirt and arm adornments and is definitely worth checking out if you have an important gathering coming up.
Another beautiful outfit available in store is ‘Invocation’, which is a gorgeous Pentagram adorned purple number, or if you’re on the lookout for more casual wear there’s a lovely grey dress called ‘Meditation’ situated next to it, replete with green and indigo scarves. These are, of course, very ‘Witchy’ outfits, and perfect for being all flouncy and mystical, and both retail at L$200. If you’re after ritual kit there are some brilliantly priced items in here too; an entire altar set for L$50 and an unusual but rather sweet moon and pentacle wall print featuring lights (would have been perfect for Yule!) which is just L$20.
As I carried on exploring, I found a store called ‘Shaman Heart’. I’ll be honest, it didn’t grab me especially at first, until I took a closer look to see what was on offer and I was pleasantly surprised.
As well as cloaks, altars and assorted fancy you’ll find staves, moccasins (!) and guided meditation pools. I really like the tree ties and the Goddess trees, which struck me as a wonderful idea. My only complaint is that they’re a tad dark, but would make a really striking talking point on your land..(For example, you could use 4 of them to delineate the quarters on your circle. I’m full of good ideas me!) What really caught my eye was the Pagan Hud. I’ve never come across one in Second Life before, but at L$450 and with free updates this one may well be worth checking out. It features 26 animations, and there’s a note card which provides full details., but I have to say that a demo of the animations would have helped convince me to part with my Lindens.
‘Magick By Design’ is a new favourite brand of mine, selling Tarot decks and seasonal altars. I really recommend that you check this place out if you’re into divination, although the store at Covenstead is a satellite and just serves to wet your appetite for the main event ( there’s a LM, go and visit!) I love their working Tarot tables, but I really dig the Rune card table. At L$399 it’s a nifty wee purchase for all those who practise this ancient Nordic craft. I have to say here that Tarot and Rune tables, wherever you buy from, are only as good as the reader who uses them, and they won’t interpret the cards for you, you have to do that bit yourself…(Or get someone to do it for you? More news coming up on that later this week!)But if you enjoy these practises then you’d be daft not to treat yourself to one.
Nearby is ‘Nightshade Design’ which stocks Nordic clothing and jewellery,. Especially eye-catching are the beautiful Rune amulets, Odinic Cross, Freja Symbol and Thor’s Hammer necklaces. Each are a measly L$100 apiece. Upon further exploration I spotted a highly detailed herbalist table, featuring 62 prims of herbal happy. At L$350 it’s a bit costly, but there’s a link to the creators home behind it and my guess is that if you follow that you’ll be able to see it in action. There are some nice Wtchy ensembles here too: ‘Nuna‘, ‘Serafina’ and ‘Morgana‘. Each one is highly detailed and replete with items such as wand for Nuna, Bow and broom for Serafina and Magick flasks for Morgana. Very nice indeed.
If you have a garden be sure to check out ‘The Hedge Witch’, another satellite store, but featuring lovely plants and herbs to decorate your Witches kitchen. There’s a fab wheel of the year planter, as well as some lovely holiday centrepieces. I especially liked the ‘Kitchen Herb Garden‘, which at L$150 struck me as great value and consists of a planter and a variety of kitchen herbals.I must quickly mention how delighted I was to find a Druidic specialist store called ‘Awen’s Fire‘. Druidry is often left in the shade ( somewhere I think that it prefers to remain tbh) but it’s a wonderful Pagan path and a fabulously rewarding way of life, and it’s great to see it represented here. Bocan Undercroft is the store owner, and it’s pretty obvious from the wares on offer here that he’s passionate about the Druid way of life. There are fire pits and structures on sale in his store, but I really like his ‘Seek the wolf within’ tee at L$50, as well as the sculpty ‘Freedom’ staff, replete with animations at L$400. Again, I’d have preferred a demo, but I’m sure if you contacted Bocan in world he would oblige. I could go on, but this is just a taster of the shopping that can be enjoyed here., I implore you to go and check it out for yourself!
At the hub of the shopping area in the ‘ The Firebird‘, a Pagan pub and inn. It’s a large, traditionally styled meeting place, and gets very busy of an evening. In fact, I must say that I encountered a fair number of people during my visit, there were lots of avatars shopping or, like myself, just milling around and enjoying the space., which is always a good sign in-world. This is a good place to mention that Covenstead also offers money trees and job opportunities too: you can apply to be bar staff or a DJ at The Firebird, should you so wish!
Both in the foyer of the pub and the visitor centre you will find a teleporter which will take you around the sim. If you select the ‘Hub and Cottages’ option, you’ll be taken to a neatly landscaped section where there are rental cottages available. I think it’s a great idea to be able to live with like-minded folk, and think it’s fabulous that Covenstead has presented this opportunity . There are two communities of cottages. In the first, the majority are basic, two room structures in a rugged style of build and are perfect for furnishing with all your Witchy wares. (Considering the styles of houses here, I think it would have been nice if a second floor could have been put in, something that could easily be achieved by fixing a roof/floor onto the second room and adding a ladder for access, but that’s just an observation on my part, and you know what a fussy moo I am:) That said they’re perfectly adequate virtual homes and I’d be happy to reside in any one of them. At this point I have to confess I was *really* nosey., and did something I usually don’t do…but I’ll hold my hand up and confess that I took a peek into a cottage and although I have no idea who lives there I must compliment them on their taste, for it was the perfect mix of Pagan and modern styling (Yes, there is such a thing!) and I really loved it. The adjacent rental community features white stone Celtic dwellings. These range in size and style, and rentals cost from L$495 a week for a 225 prim dwelling, up to L$650 per week for 350 prims. I love the little touches around the communities too, both are landscaped beautifully and feature wishing wells, beautiful wild flowers and even a small flying dragon!
Did I mention there’s a sky clad area? Well, if you’re so inclined you can bathe completely nude beside a waterfall underneath the stars…there’s also a cave with a fire pit and chill out area. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a ritual area here; after all a lot of people perform ritual in all their naked glory so it seems only fitting that there be a provision for it , but perhaps that’s something the creators are working upon. There is actually a main ritual space, adjacent to the fishing pond. It’s a ritual henge, equipped with Elven drums. It’s a perfectly adequate space, but for me it was spoiled by the ads for various fishing games that you could play at the pond area: nor did I especially care for the tip jar in the middle of the henge, next to the bale fire. I understand the need for tips, but surely this is better placed external to the circle, rather than in the midst of it?
Back to the teleporter, and this time I found myself in the Japanese ceremonial garden. It’s gorgeous; very ‘zen’, and when you go into the main building you’ll find a seated eating area replete with sake and various sushi items. Perfect for meeting friends and great for Asian-styled photo opportunities, and they also perform Tai-Chi here, how fabulous is that?
As you can see so far Covenstead really aims to please the Pagan populace, and the next location is truly awesome for the facilities that it provides. The library, which looks like a proper Antiquarian book repository, actually features readable texts on all sorts of subject ts from Egyptian to Norse Mythology, Wicca, Spiritualism, Tarot and much more. There are spell books too. It’s a useful resource and a great example of the thought that has gone into creating this space. You can even contribute to the listed works as well.
In the foyer, leading to the lecture room (and yes, they do have lectures here!) there are works of art on display from a recent competition. There’s also a book of poetry, it doesn’t appear to have been updated since August 2009 but the contents are very enjoyable. (When you click on the poetry book it deposit’s a folder in your inventory so you can read the poems at your leisure, I especially enjoyed the works by Mercy Taffler and CorvusPDX Noble)All this exploring left me gagging for a brew, so what better way to quench my thirst than to pop over to the Russian Tea Rooms? I think this is my favourite location on the whole sim; it’s a beautifully decorated, welcoming place for learning and relaxation. By clicking upon the various artworks you can learn all about Slavic Pre-Christian traditions, something I knew nothing about until I visited. There’s a lovely altar display here, backed with Runic script and kitted out with a drinking horn, fruit, flowers, candles and bread. The main room sells various eclectic items, from jewellery to the rather cute ‘Grandma’s Knitting Chair’, replete with basket of yarn. You’ll also see a couple of spell kits for sale in here, as well as a Ouija board and Crystal Ball, but really the tea room is all about appreciating the Russian Pagan tradition.
There’s so much here to see that I can’t adequately describe it in print, you really have to check it out for yourself. I haven’t even told you about the atmospheric graveyard or the Handfasting chapel, It’s fair to say that Covenstead really does offer an all round experience for those interested in ‘the ways of old’, I found it to be a really enjoyable and educational place to visit and I will certainly be going back for more.
