Kitty’s Comment: Event Fatigue

Kitty’s Comment: Event Fatigue

Guys, have you ever sat down and considered exactly how many events there are in Second Life these days? Every day, another event.

I have a confession to make; I’m suffering a severe case of event fatigue, and I refuse to be alone in thinking that I’m the only one who is completely overwhelmed by them all.

But don’t get me wrong, there are many amazing monthly events, and I would miss them if they ceased to be.

I’m the first in the queue for Fameshed and Collabor88, so I could be accused of being a total hypocrite by moaning about events as a concept. But let’s be honest, it’s quality NOT quantity that I’m moaning about here.

It’s very clear that some events are better than others; so what is it that makes a great event?

In one word: Originality. There are regular events on the calendar that quite frankly I just wouldn’t set foot in.  Why is that?

Because the items on offer are, quite frankly, crap, and as a community we seem to find it very difficult to admit when something is below par. Am I being harsh here? No, I’m being honest. I know that Second Life is a builder’s paradise and it empowers us to create our dreams, but there’s a lot of truth in accepting the knowledge that just because you can craft an item of clothing or texture a template doesn’t mean that you necessarily should. (Let alone charge for it!)

And that brings me onto another point, and one that really drives me mad. There are a number of events on the calendar that regularly feature textures, pictures and logos that can be found in their original locations after a five second Google image search. I don’t want to see famous brands in Second Life unless they have a legitimate reason to be there. I’m in a virtual environment wearing bespoke items created for it, so what could possibly make you think I’d desire to wear something by Chanel or Nike?

Here lies the problem; for some, looking stylish in world means covering themselves head to toe in logos and designs that have been sourced illegally, and that’s just not on.

Unfortunately it’s relatively easy to take a texture or design, load it into Second Life and apply it as a texture. It shouldn’t be, but alas, it is. Within minutes you can create a wearable item that you can flog and make a profit on, and the original designer will be none the wiser.

It’s unfair, unimaginative and crass. It’s cheating.

I’ll be honest here; if I see a really elaborate pattern or design on a template item I immediately try to determine if it is original, if it’s been purchased under license, or if it’s been taken without consent.

It’s not hard to do this and please don’t be afraid of putting a content creators nose out of joint by posing the question to them before you hand over your hard-earned Lindens.  If you’re curious about the origins of a design then all you need to do is drop a note card to the designer and ask them.  In fact, I implore you to do just that. If they have nothing to hide I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to tell you how it was made and where the textures were sourced from.

Sadly, some people don’t like admitting that they’ve ripped someone’s work off and can get very offended and even threatening when you challenge them, but that reaction stems from fear of being found out.

As a community I feel that we’re way too accepting; there are only a few designers out there who advertise their work as 100% original, and to my mind it’s something that we should see so much more. So let’s make a stand. Don’t patronise events or purchase from creators that blatantly rip-off logos and textures and pass them off as their own. Challenge the assumptions, ask the questions and hopefully we’ll encourage more designers to be open and honest about their creations.

Let’s see if we can bring it to a point where the badge ‘100% original’ is the standard, not the exception.

SEVEN DAYS OF DENIM CHALLENGE: DAY 3

SEVEN DAYS OF DENIM CHALLENGE: DAY 3

shirt_001Another day, another denim adventure!

Today I fancied the classic white shirt and blue jeans combo, but I mixed it up a bit by wearing the shirt open and loose, and adding some frayed denim shorts instead of full jeans. It’s a footloose and fancy free sort of look, made all the better for the glorious hairstyle that I’m sporting, along with an old classic BELLEZA skin. BELLEZA is having a bit of a sale at the moment actually, and it’s well worth your time to check them out. Well, ‘a bit of a sale’ is an understatement, it’s actually a HUGE RETIREMENT sale, so it’s in your best interest to take a trip over and scoop up some favourites before they’re gone forever.
My guess is that the BELLEZA team is planning for the release of their mesh body, amongst other things, so they’re making space in their store for all the lovely goodness coming our way. The sale gave me the chance to finally pick up the Chloe skin that I have lusted after for an age; I don’t tend to buy many skins these days, but I have ALWAYS wanted this skin because of the eyeliner options in Bundle 2.
I genuinely think it’s one of the best skins that Tricky Boucher has ever produced and it’s my honest opinion that the eyeliners, shadow and lip colours have never been matched by any other BELLEZA skin release (with the exception of their Ava BB skin- the eyeliner on that one (which is my profile pic) is LEGENDARY)
These shorts were actually a Marketplace find that I stumbled across months ago. They were only L$1, but they’re a great shape and really effective with their worn seams and overall tatty appearance. I often dress them up with tights or leggings underneath and a big baggy jumper on top, but today I wanted something a little more formal looking, and this gorgeous white open collar blouse from TRES BLAH, at the UBER SL event, was just what I needed.
Last but not least is this beautiful hairstyle from ELIKATIRA. This is another store holding an epic sale and this style, ‘Cassidy’ is included. Regular hair colour packs are available for L$99 each, but you’ll need to be quick because this astonishing offer ends on Friday.

I hope you’re enjoying these denim-centric looks that I’m posting every day this week; here’s to some more heavy duty cotton happy tomorrow!

Seven Days Of Denim Challenge: Day 2

Seven Days Of Denim Challenge: Day 2

Blueberry Denim

Day Two of my ‘Seven Days Of Denim’ challenge sees me sporting some items in of my favourite shades and creating a rather polished yet casual look.

Both my denim skirt and shirt were from BLUEBERRY, a store I haven’t visited for ages purely because I am small of brain and I forget things so easily.

This shirt is a new release; I saw it advertised on the ever amazing Second Life Inventory Facebook page and immediately knew I had to have it. I love the tuck shape and large, rolled-up cuffs,  and it will look great with so many items I own.  Even more fabulous is the fact that you get a shiny and non-shiny version of the shirt in each pack; the shiny version I think would look outstanding against a pair of black leather trousers. However, I’m not wearing black trousers, instead I opted for an incredibly (read: draughty!_ mini skirt also from the BLUEBERRY label. It’s a sort of stonewash grey but comes with belt and metal texture options, so I opted to change the shade of my belt to match my shirt, and mixed it up with rose gold buckles and rivets, which I complimented with my MONS rose-gold septum ring. Lots of mixy-matchy happy there peeps!

I kept my ‘Skye’ skin from NAR MATTARU on because I am crushing so hard on it right now and yes, I’m still wearing my MONS eyeliner (I can’t help it, I love it so!).  I did change my eyeshadow though; I’ve opted for ‘Marzipan’ (From the NM Skye range) and teamed it with just a gloss, rather than a lipstick.  My nails are long, but there’s no polish, simply one of the french manicure options that comes with the SLINK  hands.

Last but not least is my hair; I’ve kept it up and in bunches like yesterday but this time I’ve opted for messy buns with loose tendrils to frame my chops.  This is a fabulous style by TABLEAU VIVANT available at the DISTRICT FIVE event.

This look is really quite soft and gentle really, but the denim adds an urban touch. I hope you like it, and trust me, you really need one of these outstanding BLUEBERRY shirts!

Why not join me on my denim challenge? I’d be happy to have you along for the ride!

KITTY’S CHALLENGE: SEVEN DAYS OF DENIM!

KITTY’S CHALLENGE: SEVEN DAYS OF DENIM!

DENIM 3

Now, here’s a thing. I’ve had such a positive response to my last post that I’ve decided to go the whole hog and do SEVEN DAYS WORTH OF DENIM!!!

I must be mad. I mean, I like denim, but not that much. In fact, that’s something that’s currently being reflected worldwide; sales of jeans by brands such as Levi and Wrangler are absolutely plummeting, and that’s a shame because denim is iconic.  Heck, I can remember falling in love with Nick Kamen and being completely enraptured by every single 501 advert that was subsequently broadcast.

So let’s have a play and see what we can do in the virtual world with this most fantastic of fabrics!  I think this challenge is going to be a lot of fun, and will give you some cracking ideas on how to style denim pieces lurking in the corners of your inventory.

Let’s begin: Here’s my look for Sunday (today, click on the pictures to see them in extreme close-up)  To start I’ve kept it nice and simple. I left my denim top and crystals on that I featured in my last post, but decided to make the look a little more polished. To do that I added the fabulous jacket from THE SECRET STORE that I threw a fit over a few posts back, as well as a gorgeous teal skirt that I picked up as a Fifty Linden Friday bargain, and I really don’t wear nearly as much as I should…

seven days of denimTo finish I’m wearing my favourite bunches, a style called ‘Shade’ by MAGIKA. To tie the tones together I’ve opted to keep my gorgeous NAR MATTARU ‘Skye’ skin, and make-up wise I’ve kept the eyeliner but opted for soft shades to coordinate with the colours in my hair and outfit. What do you think? I confess, I think it works quite well! No wonder I look so astonished! Add a satchel, some glasses and flats and you have a sort of schoolgirl chic look..yum!

Would you like to participate in this meme challenge? I’d love to see what you can come up with, so please have a rummage in your inventory and get your denim on!

I suppose I’d better come up with some rules for this challenge, so here we go: You can wear as many denim pieces as you like, my only condition is that there MUST be at least one denim item in your outfit.

Take a picture, tell us what inspired your look and please add a link in the comments so that we can all go and see your work! (A link back to this blog would be mighty appreciated too!)
