I’ll meet you at INDIE TEEPEE

It is incredibly easy to become jaded by events in Second Life, I know I am as guilty of that as the next person, but when an event launches that is as special as INDIE TEEPEE then it is worth your time and effort to check out. I think it’s going to be the hot ticket event of the month, and it will surely benefit from frustrated avatars who can’t get into HAIR FAIR 2015. Can’t get in to buy fabulous hair? No problem, get yourself over to INDIE TEEPEE instead!

One of the things I really like about this event is the website. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve visited an event’s website and been left feeling frustrated by the lack of information. I’ve also visited many a website and become completely perplexed by the layout and what it is trying to tell me. Not so with anything on INDIE TEEPEE’s website because it’s a thing of beauty and really easy to navigate, bursting at the seams with content. There are podcasts, a Spotify playlist, a full schedule and profiles of various avatars that have been involved in the production of this event. Care has been taken to produce this website, and it shows..but does it show at the event too?

I think that it does. Like a festival in real-life there are different areas for activities and events, and lots of shopping in between. The sim has been decorated to give a Burning Life cum Glastonbury feel; where barren areas dotted with campfires are juxtaposed with greener areas and portaloos! (Try one, they’re super-fun!)

You can enjoy many activities at the sim such as watching machinima or exploring some of the artworks that are on display. You’ll be able to watch the machinima on the big screen under the stars from the comfort of the back of a pimped-out truck, or a picnic blanket.

There are a number of art installations to view and explore at the event; my personal favourite is ‘Muses’ by BryneDarkleyCazalet which is an interactive artwork featuring some inspiring female musicians. I like this because it features a number of my own personal favourite artists (Kate Bush, Siouxsie Soux, Bjork and Debbie Harry amongst others) and I find it the most personally resonant art on display at the event, but all of the pieces look spectacular against the desert backdrop.

Because this is a festival you can be assured of some fantastic live music and DJ sets. There really does seem to be something for everyone at each of the three stages. I’m looking forward to hearing some tunes, and perhaps taking in some of the live Roller Derby action that is being hosted at the event. I’m also looking forward to the events that are going to be held at the Literary Corner too.  There’s a giant copy of my favourite novel of recent years  (and I’m currently enjoying it in audiobook form read by Wil Wheaton) ‘Ready Player One’ by Ernest Kline overlooking the comfy cushions and the campfire that decorate the area.

Nothing has been overlooked here at the INDIE TEEPEE event, and I’m actually really excited about it.  Many years ago The Guardian newspaper held ‘Secondfest’ in world, which was a cracking virtual festival where I made life-long friends.  I really hope that INDIE TEEPEE proves to be the same!

PicMonkey CollageWhat do you wear at an event such as this? Well, festival chic obviously, and you’ll be able to stock up on that at the event shops. Take stacks of Lindens guys, because the shopping is good!   Some of the best content creators in Second Life are participating and you can be assured of some fabulous finds.  I found a fantastic summer top from APHORISM at the event. The ‘Sun-Kissed’ top comes in 5 pattern colours (Yellow, Black, Green, Pink and White) and 5 plain colours (Blue, Crimson, taupe, White and Black) and is quintessential festival wear. I opted for the flowery print in loose cotton which while simple perfectly encapsulates the festival vibe. (I teamed it with my APHORISM ‘Glastonbury’ boots, an old favourite of mine, these boots are the kind of virtual fashion that beg for close attention. Zoom in to catch all the details and you won’t be disappointed!) The boots and top look perfect with an epic INDIE TEEPEE festival-find, the stunning ‘Haight-Ashbury’ leather bag with an embellished pattern from REVERIE that really does need to be seen to be believed. Last but not least you’ll need a hat to give you some relief from the sun in the desert heat, and I found the perfect hat in the shape of a rather glorious fedora by REMARKABLE OBLIVION. Yes, it’s a fedora but no, it doesn’t require tipping, OK? You’ll find a full list of participating shops HERE.indie teepee_007

So, all that’s left for me to do is wander the area, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of this festival.  I’m so happy that this has been created and built in Second Life, it really does look absolutely stunning and I hope it lives up to my expectations. You know, I have a feeling it will actually surpass them..I do hope so!  I’ll meet you there by the porta-loos..

All About Alex – Introducing Genesis Labs Latest Male Mesh Head!

All About Alex – Introducing Genesis Labs Latest Male Mesh Head!

Absolute Alex

Hello Kitty-readers! I’ve not written a long, rambling blog-post in ages but get ready, because there’s one coming up right now.  I wanted to share some thoughts on the latest must-have item that has got the grid trembling with excitement, the GENESIS LABS ALEX MESH HEAD.

Mesh heads aren’t anything new and it’s to be expected that since mesh bodies have cemented themselves firmly in our virtual environment that mesh heads should do the same, but there are some fundamental differences. The main one is that most mesh heads are very limited with regards to customization options and it’s for these reasons that they’re not something I’m very keen on. However, I do expect that we will see mesh-heads take off in a massive way when the designers start to build them with gusto and the skin makers start to fully embrace them.

But just because Kitty doesn’t wear a mesh head it doesn’t mean that Jez can’t wear one.  Even though Jez isn’t my avatar (nor is he my alt, I don’t actually have one believe it or not!) I do make the decisions about how he looks, mainly because if he were to dress himself he would look like Uncle Knobby at your ugly cousin’s wedding! (You know what I mean: gravy down his shirt, socks that don’t match and lots of velour.  I shudder at the very thought! ) For that reason alone I refuse to be seen in Second Life with a train-wreck on my arm. I don’t have many standards but that one this Kitty is sticking to!

Because this mesh-head looked interesting I decided to treat him to it. This is as much an experiment in learning about mesh heads for me as it is about a change of appearance for him, so off I trotted to the COSMOPOLITAN SALES ROOM and picked up a demo with beloved in tow. We zoomed back home and began the process. Now, first of all,  I want to say that demoing this product isn’t easy because of the way the demo is packaged out of the box; when you wear it there’s a huge opaque band that sits on the head and it is very difficult to get an accurate ‘feel’ for the head because of it.  I can’t say I was especially impressed by it, but I understand why it is there.  There’s a genuine requirement for demo objects to have layers of security built into them.  I know there are some rotten types out there who think nothing of ripping off content creators and performing some sort of magical jiggery pokery that turns the demo into the actual product, thus stealing precious, hard-earned cash from the creator.

That sucks, I wouldn’t do it and I wouldn’t associate myself with anyone who did it either, but I do take issue with things that I cannot demo properly. To recap, at today’s exchange rate L$2500 is about £7.05 and to be honest that’s money that I really cannot afford to throw away in Second Life, so I need the demo to be an accurate representation of the product that I’m considering purchasing.

Needless to say, the experience that the demo was providing was putting me off.  What also put me off was the enclosed notecard which seemed tailored towards the range of existing GENESIS LABS female heads, rather than this male one. (It was also obviously translated but not so badly that I couldn’t get the gist of it.) Already this initial demo was leaving me feeling there was considerable room for improvement with the whole demo package and I wondered if that would be reflected in the actual ‘Alex’ Mesh Head itself, which Jez was eager to purchase regardless…

So we took the plunge. It’s straightforward enough if you’ve worn mesh products before (which I do, frequently) to understand what needs to be done, starting with an alpha-layer that covers your head (and eyes) because you’ll be replacing everything up top.

The head fitted well against  THE SHOPS DELUXE MALE MESH BODY that Jez wears (looks amazing but don’t get me started on their whole shopping ‘experience’ or I’ll never finish!) but immediately I started to realise the shortcomings of such an item.

For a start, you are considerably limited to the changes you can make to your appearance; you can change the length of the head, and the size of it, and the depth to some degree, but that’s it.  Everything else is static, so you can’t change the shape of your nose or mouth which means that you’re going to see lots of alternate versions of you walking around the grid. There are ways you can change your look though,  or example, Jez is a member of the IKON update group which meant he’d picked up the recent June group gift of a pair of rather fabulous eyes. (They’re from the stunning ‘Odyssey’ range in ‘Clarity’) Because these are mesh eyes he can wear them with the head, so that’s something that we can do to make our look slightly different to all others. (Note: The ‘Alex’ HUD does include a rather comprehensive selection of eyes to choose from though, in case you don’t already have mesh eyes in your inventory.)

The rest of your appearance changes are dependent upon the HUD then, which is very straightforward to use. The novelty of Alex is that there are a multitude of facial tattoo options (beautifully documented HERE by Mokatana) that you can select from and these look quite good suggesting that he had a great time during amateur hour at the local tattoo parlour! You can also go for a Hangover-esque tribal style around the eye area should you so wish.  There are scars and moles that you can select from too and all of these can be used to add character to your face and they do so really well (at least until you encounter someone in-world who is sporting exactly the same options as you).

Alex’s brow game is strong and they’re styled well.  You can opt for solid brows or the urban types with the Vanilla Ice shaved bits (which never looked good in 1990 let alone 2015) but I digress; the point is there has been some thought that has gone into the physical production of Alex and on the whole it works really well resulting in a very attractive visage indeed.

But here’s where it starts to fall apart for me. I don’t like the fact that Jez can’t change his expression.  I get fed-up with our avatar inability to smile in-world. Of course, I know that you can make facial expressions in-world but they’re hardly attractive and more novelty than anything else. I always think that I end up looking gormless when I smile, so to my mind a strength of any mesh head should be facial expressions but nope, ‘Alex’ just comes with the one look, which is glum. To be fair being a moody chuff suits him but I would have absolutely killed for a selection of expressions to play about with.

The other thing I don’t like is he has no eyelashes. I know it may seem a trivial point but I think it’s important; people have eyelashes so to my mind ‘Alex’ needs some too! I hate to see avatars without eyelashes; lashes frame the eyes and make such a difference to your appearance which can look incredibly flat without them. Besides, ‘Alex’ is pretty flat from the side anyway, unless you’ve managed to change the depth of his face with your slider settings but even then it does feel like he’s been hit in the chops with an iron skillet!  Because he’s a mesh and 3D I want to see depth and dimension so anything that can provide that is worth adding to the package.  Those minor criticisms aside, he still looks better in profile than many regular avatars you see on the grid, so he has that going for him I guess.

Facial hair is another area that offers HUD options for you to try, and I appreciate the fact that the basic shades of black, brown, blonde and red are accommodated here. The facial hair appearance is actually really well done; it looks the part and I’ve no complaints regarding it at all, in fact the hairbases that are included are really lovely and Jez can wear them pretty confidently on their own, as the main picture shows, and with regards to the facial hair and embellishments you can tell that these parts of the appearance were well considered before application and the quality of creation does shine through when these elements of design are taken into account.

The skin tone Jez is wearing Alex in is 3, and that matched relatively well with tone 16 from the Style Mode HUD for his THE SHOPS body.  The addition of a tattoo also helps hide any discrepancies in tone, and we found Jez an absolute beauty at the latest round of ANYBODY from WHITE WIDOW called ‘Tombstone’ (more on that label later!)

Oh, another quick point, ALEX comes with really dinky little ears as part of the package which Jez opted to change for his AITUI favourites (Ear system Gen. 4 Pierced)  which  were pretty easy to skin match courtesy of the epic AITUI HUD. These ears are pretty awesome actually with tons of options, not least the little tattoos that you can wear on them and if you go for the facial tattoo options in Alex they match quite well indeed!

Despite some of my more negative points there’s no denying Alex’s credentials; this is indeed a quality mesh head, but for me it doesn’t offer enough in the package to warrant the L$2500 price-tag.  Personally speaking for that price I want to see more functions and feature options and clear, concise instructional notecards.  My hope is that further releases are going to build upon the solid foundations that Alex offers. Don’t forget that there aren’t any appliers out there yet for him, so you have to mix it up a bit if you want to wear him with your existing skin or mesh body.  I was dreading this task but we actually found this to be quite successful, which I think the photograph proves.

To sum up then I think both Jez and I agreed that Alex has a LOT to offer and it’s always exciting when something as special as this mesh head is launched in-world, but I’d caution against getting swept up in the tide of enthusiasm just yet. If you can afford to splash out then go for it and enjoy, but if you’re hesitant I would say hang on to your Lindens and wait for the GENESIS LABS team to build upon Alex’s very solid foundations. It’s a great product, but it’s not a fantastic product yet although it definitely has tonnes of potential.

I feel all Shakira and Beyonce-like in this ‘Montmartre Collection’ outfit from APHORISM which is available at SHINY SHABBY. It’s a super-soft  two piece affair available in a variety of colours so that you can mix and match to your hearts content, but both top and bottoms can be worn in a myriad of different ways with other outfits too. I’m wearing mine with some examples from the belts that are designed to compliment the outfit perfectly; this is stunning summer wear that is perfect for cocktails at a beach party as the sun goes down. The fabric would keep you warm as the cool sea breeze starts to chill your sun-drenched skin. How wonderful does that sound? As you can see, the Montmartre Collection  looks absolutely stunning worn with this ‘Queen’ hairstyle from LITTLE BONES and these ‘Odyssey’ eyes from IKON, both of which are FREE GIFTS available in each store now (can you believe it?)

I’m absolutely relishing LITTLE BONES hair at the moment and the free gifts that are available when you join the group are second to none, there’s a whole shelf-full for you to rummage through. It’s really wonderful when a group owner bestows quality freebies upon members, and that’s something that Nova frequently does. This latest gift coincides with the development of a new colour palette, called ‘Duo Tone’, which the gift allows you to explore courtesy of a HUD, and I heartily recommend that you drop by the store and grab ‘Queen’ to try it.  There are ten options to try in the hud and basically each half of your hair is a different shade, either complimentary or contrasting. The results are really exciting, and the potential offered by this new palette adds a cracking twist to your in-world hair shopping pleasures. The same gratitude extends to IKON.  The eye releases from this brand NEVER disappoint (which is why I wear them 95% of the time!) and this latest group gift is no exception. The gift is an exclusive pair of Odyssey eyes, called ‘Clarity’, and they’re beautiful. ‘Clarity’ seems to consist of blue shades to the edge of the iris, with sandy tones near to the centre. Perfect for the beach then, and a fabulous gift indeed!

If you become completely hypnotised by this release and find yourself wanting more, then you’ll be pleased to know the entire range of 49 colours are available exclusively at The Mens Dept (TMD) until June 30, where they are marked down 25%. After the event ends, they will be available at the main store, at full price.
Like all IKON eyes, these are gender neutral and work on both men and women. ‘

LOTD: Goa Trance Kitty Ahoy! (Dancing around her bedroom, not the beach!)

Snapshot_005

I’ve not compiled or featured a LOTD post for a wee while so I thought that I’d share my current appearance with you all. I’m totally in love with my look at the moment, and that’s due to a number of factors: a fantastic group gift hair from LITTLE BONES, my glorious ZOUL CREATIONS skin and the amazing ARCADE offerings from ZAARA. It’s not even the most recent group gift either, that’s called ‘Rude’ and is on the counter, but this long-length style which is a shift away from my usual bobbed/mid-length favorites works perfectly with my outfit.  I don’t tend towards long hair in SL for a number of reasons. It doesn’t always photograph well with bits of clothing or limbs sticking through it and I find it very hard to actually discover long hairstyles that I truly love. I do have some, but they tend to get used for blog posts then find themselves thrown into the deepest, darkest corner of my inventory. Not so with this style at all.
I remember once reading an article where a journalist that the Pet Shop Boys do themselves a huge disservice by using epic songs as B-sides; the point being that because their quality was so great they could be released as singles. This is a gift in a similar vein; the style is incredibly easy to wear and ALL the colours you could possibly require are included in the pack. Had this been available to buy I would have bought it. Instead, Nova Faerye has been seriously generous in giving this one out to group members. I really rate the slightly off-centre parting and the way that the hair falls onto the shoulders. I also particularly like the lock that hangs down at the back too, it’s very realistic, and of course being LITTLE BONES hair you’re guaranteed some beautiful colour options. I’ve waxed lyrical about how much I adore ‘Carly’ by ZOUL CREATIONS before, but I’ve not taken her off for a number of weeks now.  I just keep finding new ways to wear her because of the quality eyeshadows and lip colours Shantia Soulstar crafted to match. As you can see the skin works with this look perfectly; the eyeshadow and lip colour compliment the colours of both my hair and my trousers completely. I opted to wear the no-brow option though just so I could add my go-to brows from JUST MAGNETIZED, and, of course, my favourite MONS eyeliner is included too!

!I also picked up this utterly amazing nose-chain from MAXI GOSSAMER at UBER. The nose-chain is something I have always wanted to try wearing in-world but have never quite felt brave enough to give it a shot.  They’ve seemed a little too obtrusive, but this delicate chain with pearl embellishment really does the trick.   I think that it works beautifully with this casual look despite it having a dressy feel.

Moving on, I discovered a store recently called B BOS. It’s clearly been around for a while, but it’s a new discovery for me and it’s not bad at all, featuring some really excellent tops, dresses, pants and other items. In fact,  I dragged a friend over there so she could also indulge. As regular readers know I do like my mesh pieces and there are plenty of those in-store to choose from, it was a highly enjoyable visit.  If you go  be sure to take your time and check out this cracking top that I’m wearing called ‘Valery’. It’s available in a number of colours and with some printed logos too, but I chose black so it would prove more versatile. It cost a very acceptable L$160, and I really rate the hanging strap and chain details, as well as the high cut and cap sleeves. I do have a few criticisms though. First up, there are a number of textured items visible in the store that are clearly not original (for example the Batman logo features prominently).  My second criticism?  I hate store logos on outfits and this top sports the B BOS logo on the back below the collar. I don’t wear store logos in real life, let alone second and I prefer items to be plain rather than have names emblazoned upon them.  I didn’t register that it had the logo on it until I had purchased the item,  but decided that I had to make an exception because I really do love the styling plus the name is relatively discreet and I can just about cope with that. Last but not least, ZAARA at THE ARCADE is absolutely killing it with these amazing ‘Arpora Fisherman’s Pants’. I’ve raided multiple yard sales and got myself every single blooming colour and I fully intend to spend my summer in Second Life wearing nothing else. They are utterly sublime, beautifully patterned and textured (as you would  expect from Zara Kohime) and fit my Slink body like a glove. I want more of them, no, I NEED more of them. They make me a very happy kitty indeed. If I can find the bracelets to go with I’ll be satisfied! (UPDATE: Found them, OH HAPPY DAY!!)

Finally, check out my flat. It’s an absolute mess, absolutely festooned with gacha wins past and present, but I don’t care a ruddy jot. THE ARCADE has provided so many brilliant decorative pieces this round that it’s hard to know when to stop, so I haven’t! There are clothes, cats, make-up and stuff everywhere, and I couldn’t be happier. As my friend Natalie put it, my flat is incredibly eclectic, and I think it’s a fair reflection of who I am in both lives, although I must confess in the metaverse I am definitely better dressed. Right, you’ll have to excuse me, I’m sticking my ZAARA Goa trance CD’s on and attempting to tidy-up..toodles!
